A Busy Day for the MPFL Before Thanksgiving

The Mighty Peace Football League (MPFL) saw had a busy day ahead of the Thanksgiving Day long weekend.

On Thursday, October 5, 2017, four games were on the docket.

And the Peace River Pioneers had a really good day. They played host to the undefeated Titans from Grande Prairie’s Peace Wapiti Academy, and won, edging them out 17-13.

“We had a solid game plan going into it,” Pioneers Head Coach Hayden Gust told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “We had a solid game plan going into it; we executed it well, and came out on top.”

Gust says all season long, the team has been very strong defensively.

“We knew what (the Titans) were going to do offensively,” he said. “The defense really stepped up, and was able to snuff out any offence the opposing team had.

“(Peace Wapiti) likes to run up the middle with their Quarterback a lot,” Gust continued. “He’s a big dynamic player, and our team was able to put a stop to that. And the opposing team also tried to go outside of us, and our ends were able to contain that, keep it inside, and make sure that (the Titans) got as few yards as possible.”

Also, the Hillside Cougars from Valleyview continue to see their game improve.

After beginning their season at 0-and-3, the Cougars are now 3-and-3 after a 33-23 drubbing of the Cats in Whitecourt.

On social media, Valleyview Head Coach Travis Loewen says that the last three games were emotionally tough and challenging games, but it’s now paying off.

The Cougars dominated from the start, having led 21-6 against the Cats at the half.

The High Prairie Renegades, meanwhile, are still looking for their first win of the year.

They suffered a particularly tough loss last night, falling 65-6 to the GP’s St. Joseph’s Celtics.

Coach Troy Johnston said on Facebook that playing one of the best teams in the province is never easy, but adds that he’s proud of how the team represented the community, schools and most of all themselves.

The other game saw the Sexsmith Sabres prevail 41-7 over GP’s Charles Spencer Mavericks.

The Cougars and the Renegades square off in Valleyview on Thursday, October 12.

The Pioneers will play host to the Mavericks on Friday the 13th.
