Alberta Justice Minister and Solicitor General, Doug Schweitzer, is applauding the decision of the Supreme Court.

The Government of British Columbia had its case to halt construction of the Trans Mountain pipeline dismissed.

Schweitzer says it was a clear message from Canada’s highest court. “Stop interfering with pipeline development as it is clearly federal jurisdiction,” says Schweitzer. “Right now, BC is running out of options on how they can try and interfere with the development of the Trans Mountain Pipeline.”

Schweitzer also says the speed of the decision in the case is not common at the Supreme Court level. “Usually, judges will reserve their decision for a month or two,” explains Schweitzer.

“They will say, ‘thank you very much lawyers, we will have an answer in a month or two.’ In this case, the judges gave their answer directly from the bench.”

He says the speed in which the case was dismissed was encouraging as well. “It was encouraging to get the tone of where the Supreme Court is coming from,” mentions Schweitzer.

“I think they have had enough of these pipeline politics as well, so that was encouraging.”
