A company focusing on renewable sources of energy will be setting up shop in Peace River.

The Peace Energy Co-operative, based in Dawson Creek, will be having its grand opening on February 26.

Executive Director, Don Pettit was in Peace River last November to talk about the company’s plans to build a solar farm by the airport and says since then, the response from residents has been overwhelming.

“I kind of lost track,” says Pettit. “Just a few days ago, the co-operative got five new members from the Peace River area.

Although the co-operative is based in Dawson Creek, Pettit says the interest in Peace River warranted the opening of another office.

“The idea is to generate more memberships because the more we have, the more likely the (airport) project is to proceed,” states Pettit.

Pettit tells the Trending 55 Newsroom that a provincial grant application was made and he is hoping for an answer by the end of this month.

He also suggests that even if the Co-operative is unsuccessful in its grant application, the project will likely go ahead.

“We would look very seriously at trying to move ahead,” explains Pettit. “It would probably be down scaled and not as good a return on investment, we don’t know yet.”

“We certainly are intending to proceed with the project and establish ourselves very firmly in the Peace River area,” concludes Pettit.

The grand opening will be from 11:30 AM to 1:30 PM on February 26 in Downtown Peace River at the strip mall on 101 Avenue.
