A high-ranking government official with ties to the Peace Country is in town. Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland came to Peace River today to meet with: local politicians, the business community, and farmers as well.

Freeland and Peace River Mayor, Tom Tarpey, made a statement together at town hall before stepping into a meeting. Tarpey opened the brief media session by praising Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, for appointing Freeland to her current position. “The Deputy Prime Minister exemplifies the character of Peace Riverites and Albertans in general,” says Tarpey. “She is smart, has a great sense of humour, is hard working and gets the job done. Examples include NAFTA 2.0 and the European trade deal.”

Freeland opened her statement by addressing the plane crash near the capital of Iran, which claimed the life of several Canadians, including Albertans. She also praised Tarpey for arranging a productive visit for her. “I am really grateful to the mayor for the warm welcome, as well as setting up a great day,” stated Freeland. “I am looking forward to my conversations with the mayor; I am also meeting with a group of local farmers and also with the chamber of commerce.”

Freeland also had plenty of praise for the area she was raised in. “I do think the Peace Country is an amazing place full of really smart, really hard working, and real entrepreneurial people” praised Freeland. “People up here really do know how to get things done.”

She pointed out she is here to listen to the people. “I hope to hear from people what their concerns are. I really feel that I am back home here, and I thought it was really important to hear directly from people in the Peace Country about their concerns, and their aspirations.”

After her statement, Freeland would not take any questions from the media in attendance.
