Fairview Chamber of Commerce Hold All-Candidates Forum

The Fairview & District Chamber of Commerce hosted an All-Candidates forum last night at the Dunvegan Inn and Suites for the hopefuls running for Town Council.

Chamber Director Debe Knudsen told the Trending 55 Newsroom that things went really well.

“Nine out of 10 candidates participated last night,” Knudsen said. “There were mixes of candidates at the event, including the older and younger, as well as male and female.  The main topics of concern were revitalizing Main Street, including the attraction and maintaining of businesses, as well as seniors services within the communities.”

She says that although turnout was good, she adds that they could’ve used some more younger people to attend.

“Voter turnout has always been lower than any age group,” said Knudsen. “I think that’s a problem anywhere, is how to get the young to participate.”

Tonight, they’re holding another forum, this time for candidates running in the MD of Fairview.

“There are actually only two candidates that are running against each other,” she said. “That is, of course, Peggy Johnson and Barry Dewitz in Ward 4. So, we’re going to just have a forum for them to start with, where voters can just simply ask them any questions they have. And after that, we’ll have the rest of the council participate, in order to see what the MD has in store for the upcoming term.”

Knudsen says she’s hoping for a good turnout there as well, but she does say that there is one challenge standing in the way.

“It’s harvest season,” she said. “So, it’s a matter of how many farmers are going to come out to this forum, especially with this nicer weather to work with.”

The forum is set to begin at 7 PM.
