The star of a young hockey player from the Peace Country continues to rise.

17-year-old Jenna Himer has signed a letter of offer to play for the University of New Brunswick (UNB) Varsity Reds when they return to the Atlantic University Sport competition for the 2018-19 season.

Earlier this year, she made the final tryouts for the Hockey Alberta U18 Female team. That’s due to take place from September 29 to October 1, 2017 in Edmonton. She’s one of 29 finalists who will compete for 20 spots on the team that’ll play for the Canadian Championship in Quebec City in November.

Himer said in an interview with the Trending 55 Newsroom last month that she’s loved the sport since she first tried out as a young girl.

“There are a lot more opportunities nowadays for girls to get scholarships, and go to university to play there,” Himer said. “There are even opportunities to play for Team Canada.”

Jenna currently plays defence for the Red Deer AAA Sutter Fund Chiefs from the Alberta Female Hockey League (AFHL), and currently attends Notre Dame High School within the city.

The Falher native, whose family currently resides in Peace River, said in a press release that she’s very excited to play at the university level.

“We are very fortunate to have a player like Jenna who will be able to step into our line-up and be an anchor for our defensive group,” said Varsity Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth. “She sees the game at a high level and holds herself to a high standard that allows her to compete shift in and shift out.

“She will provide leadership in the dressing room, and we’ll be looking for her to set the standard of a high-performance athlete within our culture,” she added.

Outside of hockey, Jenna also plans to study Kinesiology at UNB.
