Navs Defeat Flyers 5-2 in NWJHL Play

The North Peace Navigators have retained their share of the lead in the Northwest Junior Hockey League (NWJHL) standings.

They beat the Fairview Flyers last night 5-2, putting their record at 6-and-2. The Flyers continue their struggles, now with a record of 2-and-4.

The County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings retain the other spot atop of the standings, having blanked the Sexsmith Vipers 6-nothing.

The first period saw the Navs take a 2-0 lead, with Mark Simpson scoring just under a minute-and-a-half in, assisted by Isaiah Letendre. With 14 seconds left in the period, Black Carpenter scored the second one on a Power Play, with assists by Cold Diewert and Roger Supernault.

The second period gave a 4-2 lead to North Peace, with each team scoring two goals. The Flyers ended up scoring the first goal, with Zacheri Schlachter netting one from Trevor Tokarz and Kyle Cairns. The Navs answered back a couble of minutes later, with Davis Rose netting one from Mark Simpson. Then, just over seven minutes in, Cole Diewert got goal number three for the Navs, with assists coming in from Madden Terriff and Mark Simpson. With three seconds left in the second, the Flyers got another one, with Kyle Cairns getting one in from Trevor Tokarz and Noah Ross.

The Navs scored what would be the game winner about two minutes into the third period, with Isaiah Letendre getting one in from Dustin Calliou and Blake Carpenter.

Ryan Noble made 37 saves in net for the Navs, enough to make him the 1st Star of the Game. Alex Sawchuk, meanwhile, saved just 22 for the Flyers.

The 2nd Star went to Cole Diewert, who scored a goal and an assist, and the 3rd Star went to Isaiah Letendre, who did the same thing.

The Navs play their next game on the road, as they head off to Sexsmith to play the Vipers on Saturday, October 21, 2017. The Flyers have a break this weekend; They don’t play again until October 27, when they head off to Beaverlodge.
