Navs Win Two Games Over The Weekend; Flyers Fall Short in Season Opener

The North Peace Navigators now have their first two wins of the 2017-18 season for the Northwest Junior Hockey League (NWJHL), but the Fairview Flyers are still looking for their first win.

The two teams played each other on Friday, September 29, 2017, and the game was pretty close. But in the end, Theo Cunningham scored the Game winner for the Navs at 12:32 in the third period, giving the team a 4-3 win.

Christian Kenny and Calvin Sanders each scored a goal and an assist for the Navs, while Levi Pichette scored the first goal of the game. Dustin Calliou, Blake Carpenter, Daniel Noskey and Isaiah Letendre were each able to record an assist. As well, Xavier Lavoie was also able to make 37 saves in net.

The Flyers, despite their loss, still played strong throughout the game. Alex Sawchuk was able to make 34 saves in net. As well, two of the Flyers goals were scored by Mikyler Dodds, while Sacheri Schlachter got the third one in net. Matt Leuken recorded two assists, while Noah Ross, Kyle Cairns, Bailey Tokarz and Baily Gagne each recorded one.

Buoyed by their win, the Navs also played a matchup in Beaverlodge on Saturday, where they blasted the Blades by a score of 7-2, with Ryan Noble making 27 saves in net.

Blake Carpenter was the star player for this game, having scored two goals and two assists for the Navs. Theo Cunningham scored two goals and one assist, Isiah Letendre got a goal and three assists, while Cole Diewert and Daniel Noskey each got a goal. Christian Kenny scored two assists, while Thane Schur-Auger and Mark Simpson each recorded one.

The two wins put the Navs’ current season record at 2-and-2, which ties them up with the Sexsmith Vipers for second overall.

The Navs are on the road on Friday, October 6, when they head off to Clairmont to play against the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings. The Kings are currently undefeated at 4-and-0. North Peace then returns home to the Baytex Energy Centre the next day, where they are set to host the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks.

The Flyers, meanwhile, also see two games on the road over the weekend. On Friday, they arrive in Sexsmith to play the Vipers, while on Sunday, they cross the British Columbia border to tangle with the Dawson Creek Junior Canucks.
