New Season, New Coaches for the North Peace Navigators

It’s a new season coming up for the North Peace Navigators.

As well, a pair of new coaches was appointed over the weekend, including the new Head Coach.

Ken Quinney, originally born in Peace River, currently lives in Grimshaw. He brings about 14 years of experience as a head coach at various levels, including for Grimshaw’s Bantam Level.

“The timing for me was right,” Quinney told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “I’m ready to try something else. You get stuck in a rut when you do the same thing over and over again, and then the opportunity showed up her to try something different, and I’m all for it.”

As for what he has planned for the season, Coach Quinney says he’d just like to concentrate on the Team Tryouts that are happening this weekend.

“First, we need to see what we have for players,” he said. “We got to get a group of guys out on the ice, and see what skills they got. Within a week, all of that should be a bit clearer.”

He says with exhibition coming up next week, things are starting to come in place fast.

“I’m still meeting people, and still making my way around the organization,” said Quinney. “As a coach, I’m positive about the upcoming season. The team has always found a way to win, and I hope to continue that for the 2017-18 season.”

As well, Jody Menssa was appointed as the team’s assistant coach. Growing up in the Peace River area, he brings many years as both a player and as a coach, having been Head Coach of the Northwest Zone for the 2005 and 2006 Alberta Cup.

The team’s training camp is set to go from September 8 to 10, 2017. And then, the Nav’s first exhibition game is coming up on Friday, September 15, when they host the County of Grande Prairie JDA Kings at Peace River’s Baytex Energy Centre. A second one goes on September 16, when they head off to Sexsmith to take on the Vipers.

And then, their first Regular Season Game goes at home on Friday, September 22, when they once again play against the JDA Kings.
