No Council Election in Hines Creek; Term Extended for Current Council Members

The campaign continues before voters head to the polls across the Peace and Mackenzie on October 16.

But, out at the End of Steel, no council election will be taking place.

Only three nominations were received by Monday’s deadline to fill five positions on the Village of Hines Creek council.

In the interim, village official Karen Young told the Trending 55 Newsroom that the current council, which has operated with just two members for about a month, will just have to carry on a little bit longer.

“They’ve extended their term until December 31, 2017,” said Young. “We were hopeful that the five nominees could come forward so that we could acclaim them in, but that unfortunately did not happen.”

In the meantime, Young says that they have advised the Minister of Municipal Affairs on the situation. She adds that they are still waiting for a response.

“Sometimes, it takes a couple of weeks, other times it’s a month, so it all depends,” Young said. “The originally order allowed us to run until December, or until the election, provided that we had sufficient nominations.”

But, she adds that it’s also possible that it could be December before the minister sends in a response.

Current Mayor Hazel Reintjes was one of the three candidates to file before the deadline. However, the other current councillor, Deputy Mayor Jim Mackenzie, was not, opting to stand down at the end of the term.
