Members of Parliament are returning to Ottawa for their first session in the House of Commons since October’s election. Among them are conservative MP’s, Arnold Viersen and Chris Warkentin. Warkentin will be part of the opposition’s leadership as Coordinator for the Opposition Leader’s Office.

Warketin, who represents the Grande Prairie-Mackenzie riding, says fighting for local farmers will be top of mind once question period starts. “Farmers are in crisis in the Peace Country,” says Warkentin. “There are farmers that still have a significant number of crops still in the field. It is essential that the federal government responds to the crisis that has developed.”

Viersen, who is the representative for Peace River-Westlock, says he has been given a clear mandate from his constituents. “Whether its farming, oil and gas or logging, we need to get our products to market,” mentions Viersen. “We will also be fighting the carbon tax as well.”

The 43rd Parliament begins on Thursday.
