Peace River Prospectors See Silver Lining in Season Opener Loss

The Peace River Prospectors played their home opener on Wednesday at Glenmary Field.

And things didn’t exactly go as planned, as they fell 37-7 to last year’s runner-up, the Sexsmith Shamrocks.

But despite the loss, Head Coach Mark Owens says he’s actually optimistic for the coming season.

“We’re very happy with a lot of the things that are going on with the team,” Owens told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “We had team members playing in three or four different positions, so we’re really trying to find out where everybody belongs.”

Owens says that for the past few years, they’ve actually been dealing with a shortage of players.

“I’ve got 26 guys out right now,” he continued. “So it’s like a puzzle, and we need to try to see where everybody fits.”

He adds that this is the first time that they’re filming each game.

“It’ll allow the guys to really see what kind of improvements they need to make throughout the year,” said Owens. “Even talking to them after the game, they all know they need work, and they’re committed to doing it. We committed to it at the beginning of the year, that every time we step onto the field, we are a better team.”

As well, Owens says that they’re really glad that they played a good team like the Shamrocks.

“They’re usually up in the top three for each season,” he said. “And I’m glad we played them. It really allows us to see where we need to go.

“Defensively, we’ve found what’s working,” Owens continued. “I’m really pumped up and positive. And after having a discussion with the rest of the coaches, and we’re really excited about what the rest of the season is going to bring.”

The Prospectors play their next game on the road. They’re set to play the Bulldogs in Wembley on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 2 PM.
