The Peace River School Division is preparing for an initiative it started in 2012. Next week will be Parents Matter Appreciation Week across the school division. Board Chair, Darren Kuester , says the initiative started seven years ago when the PRSD asked one question in an online engagement; how can parents be involved in student success? “We got a huge response from that,” says Kuester. “It was mostly students saying how they appreciated their parents being there and it was everything from providing a safe home to making their lunch and driving them to school. It was all over the map so this inspired us to make Parents Matter Week.”

Kuester points out the week was not a board initiative. “The board does declare Parents Matter Week and that is unique to our board,” states Kuester. “It’s the students and staff of the schools that, in their own way in that area, show their appreciation to parents and guardians.”

The Trending 55 Newsroom also asked Kuester about the role his parents played in his education as he was growing up. “I will say that throughout my time in school, my mom and dad were the bus drivers so I did not miss many days of school,” says Kuester with a laugh.
