Rural Municipalities Cast Votes in Peace & Mackenzie Regions

Rural Municipalities across the Peace and Mackenzie regions also voted for a new Mayor and Council on Monday.

Voters opted for change in two wards in Northern Sunrise County, which also necessitates a change at the top.

Reeve Garrett Tomlinson has fallen in Ward 6, with challenger Gaylene Whitehead taking the seat with 87 votes, 19 votes ahead of the one-term incumbent. Ward Six includes the Cadotte Lake and Little Buffalo areas. Tomlinson’s loss means that a new Reeve will be elected on October 24, 2017 at their organizational meeting.

Ward Two is also seeing a change after seven years, with Marie Dyck losing out to newcomer Audrey Gall by a vote of 63 to 46. As well, Corinna Williams was elected in Ward 5, which was left vacant when incumbent Doug Dallyn decided not to run for re-election.

Deputy Reeve Carolyn Kolebaba was easily re-elected in Ward 1, a seat she’s held for the past 19 years. As well, incumbent Norm Duvall easily saw off a challenge in Ward 4, while Dan Boivert was acclaimed for a second term in Ward 3.

Over in Mackenzie County, four wards will be seeing some change. Anthony Peters is now the new representative in Ward Two, which was held for 37 years by retiring Reeve Bill Neufeld.

In Ward Four, John W. Driedger was defeated for re-election by David (Duffy) Driedger, who won 170 votes to John W.’s 33. In Ward Five, Ernest Peters will represent the area after defeating incumbent Elmer Derksen by a 151 to 95 vote margin.

As well, over in Fort Vermilion, Ray Toews’ brief year-and-a-half return to council has come to an abrupt end. He finished third in his Ward 7 district with just 32 votes, compared with 111 for newly-elected councillor Cameron Cardinal and 54 for runner-up Kevin Smith.

All the others opted for the status quo, with Josh Knelsen holding on to Ward 1, with Peter Braun and Eric Jorgensen regaining Wards 3 and 6, respectively. Deputy Reeve Lisa Wardley held on to Ward 10 by acclamation, while Councillors Walter Sarapuk and Jacquie Bateman did the same in Wards 8 and 9.

The Municipal District of Fairview and the County of Northern Lights each had only one ward up for election for this cycle. In the MD, incumbent Peggy Johnson held onto her seat against challenger Barry Dewitz by a 67-vote margin. As well, the county’s Ward 4 saw current councillor Brent Reese stave off a pair of challengers to hold onto his seat.
