Snowmobile trails in the Peace Region not ready as of yet

Despite the cold temperatures and snow in the Peace region last weekend, it’s not quite time to get your snowmobile ready for the season. That is according to long-time member of the Peace Valley Snow Riders, Dwayne Buchholtz. Buchholtz says all the club’s trails are closed until there is more snow and thicker ice. “There hasn’t been enough snow to open the trails at this point but crews are out cleaning and preparing the trails and as soon as we have a bit more snow, we will announce they are open,” says Buchholtz.

He also stressed that if you are taking your snowmobile over a body of water, checking the thickness of the ice is a must. “Especially at this time of year,” mentions Buchholtz. “We had a cold snap but you still want to pay really close attention to ice conditions.” According to guidelines from the Alberta Snowmobile Association, ice should be a minimum of five inches thick for a sled to go on a body of water. Buchholtz also urges caution in places where the water is flowing. “Many of the local water bodies are rivers or creeks that are flowing. Even on a static body of water, such as a lake or pond, you have to consider whether the water is flowing. Even on a lake, there could be springs.”
