That picture is the view from my car yesterday as I was driving to the GP airport to drop my friend off. But before we get there, we have to go back.
It was melting on Monday, and then re-froze overnight, which meant that some roads were pretty perilous. Now, I’m a generally great driver, and never encountered any real issues until I decided to open my dumb mouth. My friend was talking about driving speeds because I mentioned that someone was tailgating me. I then proceeded to do my “Well actually the speed limit is the highest speed you should be going if it’s clear conditions and the roads are good” speech, before noticing that in fact the road conditions were getting worse and worse the further down the highway we were getting, so like a good driver, I slowed down a little.
And after slowing down, my car hit a patch of black ice, and did this fun thing where it started fishtailing. I hit the brakes, I turn the steering wheel to try and stay on the road, and… My ABS system turns itself on, so now my brakes don’t work the way they’re supposed to. ABS is great if you don’t know what you’re doing, but super dangerous if you’re a decent driver, and now that it was on, I no longer had control of what was happening, and my car slid across the other side of the road, and off the shoulder.
Even though I have 4 wheel drive on my car, there was no way to move at all, so I had to call a tow truck. About ten minutes later though, a good Samaritan came by with a chain in his car and got us out.
That was a terrible experience. Especially considering that we were on our way to the airport for my friend to catch a flight. But that’s not the end of the story.
About a half hour later, maybe an hour, there was an idiot at a stop light who did not start accelerating when it turned green, so a whole line of people behind them were stuck parked there waiting. And as I was approaching, I realized I’d need to slow down, or possibly even stop at this light because there was no way there would be enough time for me to get through. Fun thing about ABS. It stays on if you don’t turn your vehicle off. So my brakes didn’t work again and of course all the roads were slippery, so I started fishtailing again, and without me even touching my steering wheel, within about 5 seconds, my car had turned itself almost completely around, and driven off the right side of the road, nearly completely flipping over as it went over the shoulder.
And that’s where that picture was taken.
Needless to say, I wasn’t stoked to drive home afterwards, and I waited until it had been in the positives for a couple hours before I started, and by that point, the roads were fantastic, but boy was that a harrowing experience. I didn’t even want to get near my car this morning, and I doubt I’ll feel super comfortable driving until everything is completely melted.
