The Town of Peace River wants to help residents of the town, and the Peace Region, to get more informed about how to prevent crime. The town is hosting a Rural Crime Prevention Conference later this month at the Sawridge Inn. Peace River Town Councillor, Orren Ford, says it is a great opportunity for people to learn how they can be safer. “We have three guest speakers coming in,” says Ford. “One will be from the local RCMP detachment; we also have a speaker coming from the Northern Sunrise Rural Crime Watch Association, and someone representing the Light Catch App.” The Light Catch System is an app where users can share crime related photos with the proper authorities. It is a free app that is currently used in: Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia.

Ford also says there will be a small trade show. “We are going to have six, or seven, trade show booths,” mentions Ford. “And these booths are all local businesses showing their wares of security items.” Ford points out that rural crime and urban crime are two different issues but with some similarities. “We are rural Northern Alberta so we are different than the City of Calgary and the City of Edmonton,” states Ford. “However, we still have a lot of the same issued when it comes to motor vehicle thefts, property crime and that sort of thing.”

The event is free to attend and no registration is required. It will be from 1:00-4:00 on the afternoon of January 25th.
