Grande Prairie — Jason Kenney’s UCP government was sworn in Tuesday morning and with that came a slew of cabinet announcements. One of those announcements involved the newly-elected Grande Prairie/Wapiti MLA Travis Toews being named the President of the treasury board an Minister of Finance.
The appointment marks the second consecutive candidate in the riding to hold a spot in the provincial cabinet. The last was. Progressive Conservative MLA, Wayne Drysdale who served as the Minister of Transportation when Jim Prentice was premier from 2014 to 2015.
Before Toews entered the realm of politics he worked as a CPA and CMA in the Grande Prairie area. According to his campaign website, Toews and his wife also manage a “cattle ranching operation and an oilfield environmental company”. He ran on a platform that focused on scrapping the Carbon Tax and to bring jobs back to the province. .
Other notable cabinet appointments on Tuesday included Calgary-Elbow MLA Doug Schweitzer as Provincial Secretary, the lone UCP Edmonton MLA Kaycee Madu as Minister of Municipal Affairs, and Leela Aheer as Minister of Culture, Multiculturalism and Status of Women.
Peace River MLA, Dan Williams, was not appointed to a cabinet position.
