Team Trees is Changing the World

Regardless of how you feel about climate change, we can all agree that more trees is a good thing. Just standing in a forest for a few minutes is scientifically proven to improve your mood, and anyone who’s gone hunting in the woods over a weekend, or even just gone for a quiet walk in the autumn, we can agree that being in nature just feels good. Trees are the places that all our favourite animals live, and we use trees to build and heat our houses, make paper and other supplies we all need. Plants in general make the air more breathable, and remove toxins and other things from the air. We wouldn’t be where we are now without trees, and well… Deforestation has devastated so much of our country and planet, and if we don’t do anything, there’s gonna be some serious consequences.

And therein lies the problem… It’s expensive, and difficult to replant trees, and forest conservation always falls by the wayside eventually, once big companies convince the governments that it’s more lucrative to remove the forest instead of preserving it. We won’t see the benefit of saving trees in the immediate future, and while it’s what’s important for our kids’ futures, most people care more about their present profits, over the safety and happiness of future generations. What we really need is a massive worldwide effort to plant a ton of trees, and that’s exactly what #TeamTrees is.

It started because YouTuber “MrBeast” reached 20 million subscribers, and he was wondering what he should do to celebrate. A bunch of his fans started joking around, saying, “Why don’t you plant 20 million trees?” The guy is known for doing ridiculous stuff like that. Filling a backyard with millions of Orbeez, filling his friend’s backyard with billions of pennies, and then using those pennies to buy a new car for him, and other ridiculous things like that. Planting 20 million trees seems pretty crazy, but if anyone could do it, it’d be MrBeast. He teamed up with NASA engineer and YouTuber, Mark Rober. Their plan is to plant 20 million trees by New Years. Or to put it another way, 20 mil by 2020.

They can’t do it alone though. And that’s why they’ve teamed up with a bunch of other YouTubers. And by “a bunch,” what I really mean is “most of them.” Even if you don’t know anything about YouTube, you’ve probably at least heard of one of these people at least in passing. Rhett & Link, Phillip Defranco, Marshmello, Marques Brownlee, The Slow Mo Guys, Ninja, Jacksepticeye, Smarter Every Day, PewDiePie, Simply Nailogical, The King of Random, The Try Guys, and Jeffree Star. And like… around a thousand others at this point. You may have a pretty negative idea of what a YouTuber is, because news channels like to paint them in a bad light, but these people are actively working to make the world a better place.

It’s working too. The charity they’ve partnered with is called the Arbor Day Foundation. Every dollar donated to them equals one tree planted, so essentially, they’re trying to raise 20 million dollars. Within a day, they’d already raised a few million dollars, with donations from company CEOs, and famous people like Elon Musk. At the time of writing this, they’ve reached over 15.6 million dollars, in less than a month. They’ve still got almost a month and a half to go, and I’d like to encourage you to donate what you can to the cause. As the saying goes, “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”
