Valleyview Cougars Edge Out Peace River Pioneers 14-13

It was a close game in the end between Peace River and Valleyview at Glenmary Field on Thursday.

But in the end, it was the visitors who prevailed. Receiver Dylan Tollefson from the Hillside Cougars ran for a touchdown during the final minute of the game to edge out the Pioneers 14-13.

“(Dylan) obviously had a great game last night,” Valleyview Head Coach Travis Loewen told the Trending 55 Newsroom. “This is actually the second year in a row that he’s beat Peace River on a last minute play. Last year, we ran out a wide-out reverse to him, and he ran it in with a game-winning touchdown with less than a minute left.”

All in all, Loewen says the entire team came together in the end, and played very well.

“Our defensive line as a whole did a great job against that run game throughout that match-up,” he said. “And (Quarterback Cody Mulligan), though he did have some bad throws, and got picked off a couple of times; he came back and didn’t shy away from throwing it when he had to.

“That shows that Cody’s got the confidence, and that short memory that our coaches are always looking for from our quarterbacks,” Loewen added.

While things didn’t quite turn out as the home team had hoped, Pioneers Head Coach Hayden Gust did see some of the positives that came out of this matchup.

“One of our players, Kohl Lougheed, ran the ball great for us offensively,” said Gust. “He also had a very important pick on defense at safety during the third quarter, and it allowed us to gain some yards and turn into points later on.”

Gust also discussed what they need to do differently.

“There are still lots of little things that still need fixing,” he said. “We still have some injuries to get over, and we lost two more players last night as well. So, mostly, it’s just putting players in the right positions, minimizing the errors our team can make, and make sure we’re health for our next game.”

The Pioneers have their next game on Thursday, October 5, 2017, when they welcome the Peace Wapiti Titans to town at 4 PM. During that same time, the Cougars will also play a road game in Whitecourt against the Cats.

As well, the High Prairie Renegades are on the road. They take on the St. Joseph’s Celtics at Grande Prairie’s CKC Field at 5 PM, also on October 5.
