Valleyview’s Hillside Cougars Blast GP Comp 36-zip

What a way for the Hillside Cougars to finish out their regular season at home in Valleyview.

They dominated the game right from kick-off, as they blasted the Grande Prairie Composite Warriors 36-nothing.

“They came out, and executed well,” said Cougars Head Coach Travis Loewen. “We were able to do just what we did last week (against High Prairie) and roll out some of our younger players, in order to give them some valuable experience.”

Loewen told the Trending 55 Newsroom that he couldn’t say if he could actually pick out any one player from this game who truly stood out.

“It was definitely a whole-team effort,” he said. “Everybody got their chance to carry the ball, and to make plays. A whole bunch of different players took advantage of that, and made some plays all game long.”

He also had some words of encouragement for his opponents too.

“Grande Prairie Comp has a very young team,” said Loewen. “They have some great athletes there; they’re just a little thin right now. Hopefully, that program can continue to grow. They’ve improved over last year, and hopefully, that continues to be the case.”

Loewen says at this point, he has no clue who they’ll play in the upcoming post-season.

“It all depends on where we finish in the standings after the rest of the games are played today,” he said. “If we finish in fourth, we’ll be up against GP’s St. Joe’s Celtics. If we’re in fifth, we’ll be up against Grande Prairie Comp again.

“But no matter whom we play,” he continued. “I don’t think there’ll be too many changes with how we play. We’ll just keep adding a few more wrinkles to our playbook, and just keep focusing on what we still need to work on. The whole goal is to improve every week, and be a better team than the week before. That will never change regardless of who we play.”

The win means that the Cougars finish the regular season at 5-and-3.

The final three games of the Mighty Peace Football League’s (MPFL) regular season go this evening.

At 4 PM, the Peace River Pioneers are set to put out the welcome mat for the High Prairie Renegades. The Whitecourt Cats are in GP to take on the St. Joe’s Celtics at 5 PM, while at 8 PM, the Peace Wapiti Academy Titans will play host to the Sexsmith Sabres.
