Friday 5 – Comic Book Movies

360_f_66281701_igxsiow78gbbzltp37kqenvhcaugslrb-jpg

For the first time in a while it’s the Friday 5 !!! I will look at various topics counting down the top 5, in my opinion. With the box office topping Superman and the highly anticipated Fantastic Four: First Steps hitting theatres today I feel it is time to look at the top 5 Comic Book Movies.

5. Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Many people may jump to the MCU version of Spiderman for a movie on the list or even the animated ones with the Spider-verse, but in my opinion this is the top Spider-Man film and even over 20 years later it remains one of the best to date. Tobey Maguire is at his Spider-Man peak and the addition of Alfred Molina as Dr. Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus was perfect casting and a welcomed addition. Returning characters like Mary-Jane, Harry Osborn and even Willem Dafoe reprises his role as Norman Osborn (Green Goblin) helped carve out this great film. The film shows a Spider-Man struggling with the balance of Peter Parker and Spider-Man while needing to defeat a friend in  Dr. Otto Octavius whose experiment goes horribly wrong and causes his to become Doctor Octopus who must complete his work at all costs. It is an example of the storytelling that isn’t so prevalent on more modern comic book films, and demonstrates how valued Spider-Man is the to the people.

4. Logan (2017)

Perhaps the grittiest comic book movie to date is Logan. In the near future, a weary Logan (Hugh Jackman) cares for an ailing Professor X (Patrick Stewart) at a remote outpost on the Mexican border. His plan to hide from the outside world gets upended when he meets a young mutant (Dafne Keen) who is very much like him. Logan must now protect the girl and battle the dark forces that want to capture her. The movie brings a whole new side to the Wolverine character in an R-rated film that was widely praised.

3. The Crow (1994)

We are going old school with this one that was the last film of Brandon Lee, an emerging talent and yes song of Bruce Lee who died during filming. The movie is a darker film that sees a man brought back by a crow to make things right after a gang attacked and killed him and his fiancé. A great gritty story and well acted film that really gave some stock that comic books realyl could be great movies. They have tried to make sequels and remake but none come remotely close to the brillance that is The Crow

2. Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)

Well it is the second appearance of Wolverine as he FINALLY joined Deadpool for a buddy movie. This might be recency bias but one of the best comic book movies made defiantly in recent times. We get not just the comedy from the two characters but also a lot of well done and placed cameos, as well as some emotional moments that Deadpool movies aren’t known for. I hope they can get Hugh and Ryan together again and continue this brilliance.

1. The Dark Knight (2008)

Taking my top spot is some batman and in my humble opinion the best performance in a comic book film and one of the best character performances in cinema from Heath Ledger as The Joker. Christopher Nolan depicted Batman better than ever in his trilogy making up for the disaster that was Batman and Robin in 1997. The movie from the get go gets the blood pumping from the opening scene with one of the best reveals in history. It is hard to not have this on any top 5 at or near the top spot.
