NWJHL President Talks About Upcoming Season

nwjhl_navy-png-5

We’re close to the start of another season in the NWJHL.

League president Peter Burletoff says they’ve got some new things going on for this year to better promote the league.

“This year, we’ve mandated every team in the league to have play-by-play broadcasts on each of their games (on FloHockey). If you our your friends can’t attend the games person, please log-on to FloSports and watch our hockey games. We’re promoting it that way. We’re also talking to business owners across the Peace Region as well to come on as sponsors.”

The opening night games on September 12 include the Navs at home against Fort St. John and Fairview facing Dawson Creek.

The La Crete Lumber Barons will begin on September 13 at home against Beaverlodge.

Player movement has been a major focus in junior hockey over the past year, after the NCAA changed their rules to allow players with major junior expierence.

Burletoff says their teams are encouraging players to explore opportunities at college and higher levels of junior hockey.

“For the past few years, we’ve had graduating players go on and play college hockey at the NCAA level. It’s a great opportunity in our league for players to develop and to move on. Each team will encourage those players to move on to higher caliber hockey, either in the NCAA or the Junior A level in Alberta.”
