On Thursday, September 4, at approximately 7 p.m., the Peace River Fire Department responded to a request from the RCMP to assist in rescuing a young bear in Upper West Peace.
Wildlife officials had tranquilized the two-year-old bear, but after being sedated, it climbed a tree, became entangled, and fell asleep.
Firefighters from Peace River and Weberville utilized a ground ladder to reach the bear, secured it with a rope, and carefully lowered it to the ground.
Alberta Fish and Wildlife then took custody of the bear for release in a remote area outside of town.
This successful rescue highlights the importance of community cooperation in wildlife management.
Residents are reminded to give bears space and keep properties free of attractants like open garbage to prevent similar incidents.
