PowerWood Canada, headquartered in Calgary, has announced plans to construct two facilities in Northern Alberta to convert forest fire-damaged timber into bio pellets, serving a low-carbon alternative to coal in Japanese power plants.

The first facility, located near La Crete in Mackenzie County, will commence construction in spring 2026, creating up to 290 jobs.

Utilizing the steam explosion method, the plant aims to produce 350,000 tons of black pellets annually by the end of 2026.

CEO David Peters highlighted the collaboration with local businesses and Indigenous partners, emphasizing the project’s role in mitigating wildfire threats and producing a sustainable coal replacement.

Earthworks for the Peace River plant have been completed, and a second facility near High Level is planned, contributing to over 500 jobs across the supply chain.

The company has secured long-term forestry licenses and a purchase agreement with a major Japanese buyer.

A public listing on the Toronto Stock Exchange is anticipated in 2026.
