
In late October 2025, Valleyview RCMP, assisted by the Canadian Animal Task Force and Alberta Animal Rescue Crew Society, executed a search warrant at two properties operated by In The Woods Animal Rescue in Marie Reine and MD of Smoky River, Alberta.
300 animals, including dogs, cats, and livestock, were found in varying states distress, deprived of basic necessities and veterinary care.
As a result, 69-year-old Sheryl Woods of Marie Reine and 67-year Cheryl Bastien of the MD of Smoky River were charged with willful neglect of animals, causing unnecessary suffering, and permitting animals to be in distress.
Both have been released on conditions and are scheduled to appear before the Alberta Court of Justice in Peace River on December 15, 2025.
Constable Dayna Serafin of Valleyview RCMP expressed gratitude for the coordinated efforts of over 16 animal welfare agencies across Alberta, local businesses, and community members, which ensured the rescued animals were placed into safe environments where they are receiving the care they need.
