Alberta’s Minister of Transportation and Economic Corridors, Devin Dreeshen, announced that a recent public survey indicates strong support for increasing speed limits on rural divided highways.
The online survey, conducted from November 7 to December 12, 59,400 responses, with 68% of participants favoring a speed limit from 110/h to 120 km/h.
Dreeshen noted that Alberta’s divided highways are engineered to safely accommodate speeds of 120 km/h, and advancements in vehicle safety and road design further support this change.
Additionally, over 90% of respondents support restricting commercial trucks from certain lanes on major highways to improve traffic flow.
In response, the government plans to launch a controlled 120 km/h mini-trial on select rural divided highways next year, accompanied by thorough monitoring and safety evaluations.
This approach aims to base future decisions on real-world data and public feedback, ensuring the continued safety and efficiency of Alberta’s roadways.
