Winter Hits Hard: December Snowfall More Than Doubles Seasonal Average

early-winter-forecast-png-3

Winter has arrived with authority, delivering a frigid and snow-filled start to the season across the region — just as forecasters warned.

The Weather Network had called for a strong and cold beginning to winter, and conditions so far have more than lived up to that outlook. Average December snowfall typically sits around 24 centimetres, but current estimates show more than 50 centimetres has already fallen — more than double the monthly norm, with significant time still left on the calendar.

Temperatures have also taken a sharp dip. Readings are running approximately six degrees colder than normal for December, and forecasters say even colder air could move in as the month comes to a close.

While there may be brief breaks from the extreme cold, The Weather Network expects below-average temperatures to remain the dominant pattern through January and February. An active weather setup is also expected to persist, bringing near-normal or even above-normal snowfall across much of the region.

In short, winter’s grip is far from loosening. With more snow and cold on the way, residents should prepare for wintery conditions well into the new year — and a season that may feel longer than usual before spring finally arrives.
