Pedestrian safety a priority at intersections, says RCMP

rcmp-jpg-50

As the new year begins, the Alberta RCMP is emphasizing intersection safety to ensure the well-being of all road users. Intersections high-traffic areas where motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians must exercise caution and adhere to right-of-way rules.

For motorists:

– Slow down as you approach intersections, come to a complete stop, and check all directions before proceeding.
– Obey all traffic signs and signals, making full stops at red lights and stop signs, even when turning right.
– At four-way stops, yield to the vehicle on your right.
– Maintain a safe following distance, as vehicles ahead may stop unexpectedly.
– Use turn signals when making turns and ensure it’s safe before turning left.
– Remember, pedestrians have the right-of-way at all marked and unmarked crosswalks.
– Be prepared for the unexpected, including changing lights, slippery road conditions, and other drivers’ actions.
– Do not speed up on a yellow light; instead, slow down and prepare to stop.

For pedestrians:

– Avoid jaywalking; always cross at intersections or designated crosswalks.
– Use crosswalks and pedestrian-activated signals when available.
– Stay alert by removing headphones and putting away electronic devices when crossing streets.
– Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you before crossing.

Sgt. Darrin Turnbull of Alberta RCMP Traffic reminds everyone: “Intersections can present challenges for drivers and pedestrians. Always be prepared for the unexpected. Pay attention to changing lights and each other before proceeding through an intersection. Traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
