A partnership established this past year between the Peace Regional SPCA in Peace River and Whiskers Cat Café in Grande Prairie has already helped more than 100 cats find new homes, pushing the café past an impressive milestone of 1,500 adoptions since its opening.
Whiskers Cat Café has been operating for over six years and has become a key part of the region’s adoption network. For its first five years in business, the café was partnered with Bandaged Paws Animal Rescue in Grande Prairie and totaled 1,400 adoptions over the period. This year, the café transitioned to focus exclusively on a partnership with the SPCA in Peace River. The aim of the collaboration is to expand opportunities for SPCA shelter cats to connect with a greater number of potential adopters.
Reaching 1,500 adoptions places Whiskers Cat Café among one of the top adoption providers of its kind. Comparable cat cafés in much larger population centres have reported roughly 500 adoptions over longer periods of time. Whiskers averages about seven adoptions each week, making it one of — if not the — largest adoption contributors in the Peace Region.
Residents interested in adding a cat companion can apply through the Peace Regional SPCA website or complete an adoption application directly at Whiskers Cat Café in Grande Prairie.
