Northern Sunrise County has released its official Position Statement on evaluating potential nuclear energy projects in the Peace Region. The statement reaffirms the Council’s commitment—first established in 2024 and renewed after the 2025 election—to remain informed, prepared, and collaborative as discussions advance.

Two projects are currently under consideration:

– Energy Alberta’s Peace River Nuclear Power Project, a large-scale development with two potential sites identified—one in the County of Northern Lights and the other in Northern Sunrise County.

– Nucleon Energy’s Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Project, with sites being explored regionally within Birch Hills County, the MD of Smoky River, and Northern Sunrise County.

The Council emphasizes its focus on safety, evidence-based learning, economic diversification, and transparent engagement. Next steps include active participation in Alberta’s provincial nuclear engagement process, strengthening regional collaboration through the Peace Region Energy Committee and the tri-municipal SMR committee, and working with project proponents and municipal partners to provide educational opportunities and conduct studies assessing regional readiness.

Reeve Claude Rodrigue stated, “Nuclear development presents both opportunities and responsibilities. Our goal is to ensure our ratepayers and the region are informed and positioned to make decisions that reflect long-term safety, sustainability, and community benefit.”
