Valleyview Council Meeting Highlights

Rising policing costs, Scotiabank branch closure, and additional library fund were among topics of discussing at the recent Valleyview Town Council Meeting on March 9.
Council reviewed preliminary estimates from the Government of Alberta under the province’s renewed Police Funding Model. Projections show Valleyview’s municipal contribution could increase from about $122,000 in 2026/27 to approximately over $745,000 by 2030/31.  Such an increase would place significant pressure on the town’s limited tax base. Council supported formally communicating affordability concerns to the province and encouraging consideration of phased implementation or other mitigation measures for smaller municipalities.
Council will also be sending a formal letter to Scotiabank advocating for continued service access after the announced closure of its Valleyview branch. While they recognize that branch decisions are made by private institutions, council will request the installation of a full-service ATM to help residents and businesses manage everyday banking needs locally.  On a side note, the Peace River Scotiabank branch will also be closing in May.
Finally, Council approved a request from the Valleyview Municipal Library for an additional $10,000 in annual funding to help address rising costs while maintaining services and programs for residents. Council states the library continues to serve as an important community hub offering accessible educational and cultural opportunities.
