Big Lakes County Preparing for Spring Melt

big-lakes-county-png-27
Big Lakes County is taking proactive steps to prepare for spring melt conditions after a higher than average snowfall this winter.  Crews are working to reduce the risk of pooling water and localized flooding with warmer temperatures on the horizon.
The County says public works teams have already cleared roughly 14km of drainage ditches, focusing on high-flow areas, while also cleaning culvert ends in known trouble spots. Crews have been pushing back snowbanks across the region to improve runoff, and about 30 culverts have been steamed so far this spring, with more work planned as conditions evolve. Monitoring efforts are also underway in local hamlets as the County prepares to ramp up seasonal maintenance.
Reeve Tyler Airth says spring melt is a critical period for the region, particularly in low-lying areas and near rivers, creeks, and lakes where flooding risks are higher. He notes those locations are being prioritized for inspection and maintenance, with crews working to keep drainage systems functioning and ready to respond as needed.
The County is also urging residents to take precautions on their own properties, including clearing snow away from foundations, directing meltwater away from buildings, ensuring sump pumps are functioning, and keeping nearby drainage paths clear. Officials say residents should report any drainage concerns, especially urgent issues such as flooding, damaged roads, or blocked culverts.
