May 4 – 10am

ICE JAM WARNING: (John D’or Prairie)

Flooding concerns are rising in northern Alberta as an ice jam forms on the Lawrence River near a bridge east of John D’Or Prairie.

Water levels have surged, impacting homes within the community.

The River Forecast Centre says it’s working closely with Little Red River Cree Nation, where officials are actively monitoring conditions.

Residents are being urged to stay alert as the situation develops.

ICE JAM WATCH: (Garden River)

The breakup of the Peace River through Garden River was reported on May 3, bringing minor impacts to nearby roadways and low-lying areas around Garden Creek.

Officials say a small ice jam, stretching about 6.5 kilometers, has formed near the community, with additional ice moving downstream that could either expand the jam or suddenly release it.

Authorities warn that shifting ice conditions can cause water levels to rise rapidly—sometimes in under 10 minutes—posing a serious risk to anyone near the river.

Residents and visitors are urged to exercise extreme caution.

The advisory remains in effect as crews monitor conditions, and it may be extended further downstream if necessary.

East and West Prairie Rivers: (High Prairie)

A High Streamflow Advisory continues for the East and West Prairie Rivers, near High Prairie.

Rising temperatures are expected to keep melting the remaining snow, leading to higher water levels in the coming days.

However, levels are not anticipated to reach the peaks recorded last week.

Peace River to Notikewin River: (Manning)

An Ice Advisory continues for the Peace River to the Notikewin River, near Manning.

Ice movement is expected to persist along the Peace River between the Notikewan River and Garden River, while ice breakup is already in progress further downstream.

This advisory remains active to highlight evolving river ice conditions and may be expanded downstream if necessary.
