Statistics Canada says the economic region that includes the Peace continues to have Alberta’s lowest unemployment rate, despite a slight increase in June.

The Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River region posted a five per cent unemployment rate, up just one-tenth of a percentage point from May.

That was still the best among Alberta’s seven statistical regions.

Provincewide, Alberta’s unemployment rate climbed to seven per cent in June, well above the national rate of six-point-five per cent.

The province added more than 20,000 people to the labour force, with the biggest employment gains in the private sector, led by wholesale and retail trade and construction.

Nationally, Canada’s unemployment rate edged down to six-point-five per cent.
