A Slave Lake man will learn his sentence later this month for his role in a crash that killed two charity motorcyclists near High Prairie in 2024.
Forty-year-old Michael Maurice Koochin has pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving causing death and six counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.
Sentencing was expected to move ahead in High Prairie Court on July 30, but nearly 30 family members and friends delivered emotional victim impact statements before Justice C.A. Palmer, taking the entire day.
The judge has now scheduled sentencing submissions for August 25.
The charges stem from a collision on Highway 2 near Sucker Creek that claimed the lives of Laurent Isadore of Driftpile Cree Nation and Tyler Duboski of Edmonton.
Six other riders were injured in the crash while taking part in a charity motorcycle ride.
