National Red Dress Day today

Today (May 5) marks National Red Dress Day, a day dedicated to remembering and honouring missing and murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people. The annual day uses the image of red dresses as a powerful visual reminder of lives lost and the ongoing call for justice, awareness, and change.
In Peace River, residents are invited to take part in a local gathering and memorial walk this evening.  The event begins at 4:30pm at the Peace River Museum, followed by a memorial walk at 5:00pm to the Sagitawa Friendship Society. Upon arrival, participants will take part in an honour ceremony, along with a sacred fire and tobacco offering. The evening will also include an open mic for reflection and a community meal featuring stew and bannock.
Residents are encouraged to wear red, hang a red dress at their home or workplace, and attend in support of families and loved ones affected. Organizers say showing up sends a powerful message; one of remembrance, respect, and a shared commitment to ensuring these voices are never forgotten.
