This May, Alberta RCMP is reminding drivers to take simple steps to prevent vehicle thefts and break-ins across the province.

In 2025, there have been more than 7,200 vehicles stolen in Alberta RCMP jurisdictions, along with over 5,100 thefts from vehicles. Half-ton trucks continue to be the most commonly stolen vehicles.

Police say many of these crimes can be prevented by following basic safety habits. Drivers are urged to never leave vehicles running unattended, always lock doors and close windows, and avoid leaving keys, garage door openers, or personal documents inside.

RCMP also recommends parking in locked garages when possible, or in well-lit areas within sight of your home. Valuables, loose change, and personal belongings should also be removed from vehicles to avoid attracting thieves.

Officials say while auto theft remains a concern, taking a few extra precautions can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim.
