AFSC Extends Recommended Seeding Dates

Alberta’s Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC) is extending recommended seeding dates.

On the syndicated radio show Call of the Land, AFSC Interim Vice-President Chris Dyck says in some of the hardest hit areas, the major crops were pushed to between 5 to 10 days.

“We’ve looked at the agronomy, as well as the days of maturity,” Dyck told the program. “We kind of pushed is as far as we could, while maintaining the integrity of the program.”

Dyck also took the time to explain what’s meant by recommended seeding dates.

“If you seed up to that date, you qualify for quality coverage,” he said. “Most major crops can be seeded up to June 20, but I’m referring to those dates that you have to seed before to maintain your coverage.”

He says the AFSC is hopeful that farmers can seed all of their land this year.

“But in the event that some of it won’t,” Dyck continued, “We have something called an Unseeded Acreage Benefit that compensates for people investing in that land and getting it ready for the crop. We’ve increased that for up to 10 percent, depending on what producers have done to get that crop ready to go.”
