Peace River Holds Peace Regional Rec Centre Ground-Breaking Ceremony

It was an evening of down-pouring rain in Peace River last night.

But even still, the Town of Peace River held a ground-breaking ceremony at the site of the new Peace Regional Recreation Centre.

In a press release prior to the event, the town said while the building is located within town limits, it’s truly remarkable to see the amount of regional support for the project. They add that without Northern Sunrise County, the County of Northern Lights and the MD of Peace, the project wouldn’t have been possible.

In an interview with the Trending 55 Newsroom, Peace River Mayor Tom Tarpey says the building that’s going up across the street from the Normand Boucher Arboretum is long overdue.

“Our old Baytex Energy Arena has had its day,” said Tarpey. “But the walls are starting to show its cracks, and we now have to go in there to plaster them over to prevent the asbestos installation from falling out.”

He says he’s very excited to see the new facility begin to go up.

“It’s also going to be a community centre,” Tarpey said. “It will have a broad range of activities underneath the roof, from an arena to a field house. Kids can play indoor soccer, while seniors can walk on the track in the middle of winter without having to worry about slipping and falling.”

BR2 Architecture designed the new building that’s set to go up, while contracting firm Marshall-Lee has been tasked with putting it together.

As well, Baytex Energy has purchased the naming rights for when the future centre is built.

The town says they’ll provide updates on the construction process as they receive them.
