Emergency responders, as well as members of the Peace Regional Traffic Safety Committee, were on hand in a variety of locations informing residents about why residents shouldn’t do fly-bys around a school bus if it’s stop sign is out, and the red lights are flashing.
“Lots of kids are out on the streets now that school’s back,” Peace River Fire Chief Tim Harris said at the Tim Horton’s location. “And lots of school buses are out too. So, the important message is when you see lights flashing, there’s no passing, and let the kids get on and off the school bus safely.”
Harris says there are measures being put in place in order to stop fly-bys from happening in the first place.
“Some of the school divisions are starting to fit cameras on their buses at a cost of $2,500 per bus,” he said. “It’s being done in order to help catch those speeders. As well as being unsafe, fly-bys are also illegal, and there’s a pretty hefty fine if you’re caught doing it.”
A fly-by carries a fine of $543 dollars, as well as six demerit points on your licence.
Besides Tim Hortons, it was also held at the Peace River McDonald’s, Nampa Fas-Gas, Grimshaw Mac’s, Fairview Husky, Manning’s Subway and North Town Esso, as well as the Dixonville General Store.
Sponsoring the free coffees at each location were the Towns of Peace River and Grimshaw, as well as the MD of Peace.
