“My main priorities are ensuring prosperity and economic development. I think it’s an exciting time for business and the economy despite the downturn. With basically two new governments, we have to find the opportunity within that structure. I’m excited to get involved in moving our town and region forward economically.”
Welke first arrived in High Level in 1996 on a one-year contract with a pharmacy and has been here ever since. He and his wife own pharmacies in High Level and Fort Vermillion. He also serves on the board with Community Futures and is also on the True North Health Advisory Council as a volunteer for Alberta Health Services.
The seat became vacant following the resignation of Beth Gillis on August 31 when she moved out of the community. Heather Jonson and Scott Chandler are also running for council. The High Level by-election will be on November 20 at town hall and advanced voting takes place on November 15.
