Lac Cardinal is normally is a very busy place in early March when the Alberta Pond Hockey Championships take to the ice.

That will not be the case this winter as organizers have cancelled the 2021 edition of this event.

Board member Dave Allen says it was a tough decision to make but the amount of people they normally have there plus the public health restrictions would make it very hard to pull off.

“Even trying to follow protocols with masks and spacing, I just don’t know how we’d do it. When people are coming in and changing and getting their gear on and getting ready to go out, and even just trying to run a simple beer garden like we do out there for the adults, it’s very tough.”

Even with this year’s cancellation, Allen says they’re committed to come back in 2022.

“The event itself has been a steady event over the years. There’s been lots of participation from local and out of town teams and now introducing the juniors as we have has been very popular. A lot of the kinds want to get out and participate on the Sunday.”

When the event does comeback in 2022, Allen says they may try to get some more new features for it.
