Public input wanted for the Shaftesbury Trail Realignment Project

The Town of Peace River will be starting extensive water and sanitary line upgrade work this upcoming Spring/Summer as part of the Shaftesbury Trail Utility Realignment Project in part with the Building Canada Small Communities fund grant program.

A variety of project components will begin as soon as the weather allows. There will be water line and sanitary line realignment along Shaftesbury Trail, an upgrade to an old lift station and a brand new lift station being put in.

Director of Engineering and Infrastructure for the Town of Peace River, Jim McCuaig says there aren’t any problems with the lines right now, but they want to prevent future issues. “Existing lines that are along Shaftesbury Trail are in an active geological zone that highways is currently investigating. It’s in the area where rockfall occurred about two years ago, so being in a sensitive area we want to realign those utility lines into a more stable area.” McCauig explained.

McCuaig noted the project is a positive for neighbourhoods along Shaftesbury Trail, especially for Lower West Peace with Lift Station No. 4 being upgraded.

The Upper West Peace North area has also drafted a new future land use plan to align with infrastructure being installed in the near future and in years to come.

Manager of Planning and Development for the Town of Peace River, Alisha Mody says the plan itself is intended for the future, which would be market driven. “We are at the consultation phase, and we have a draft plan we are comfortable with as well as the land owner, but we need public feedback.” Mody stated regarding the Upper West Peace North Area Structure Plan.

The Town of Peace River will be holding a public information session for the Shaftesbury Trail Utility Realignment Project on March 18, 2021 at 7 p.m. via Zoom. Click here for the full details for the information session and project.
