The Provincial government is providing funding to the Alberta Off-Highway Vehicle Association and the Alberta Snowmobile Association to help with the maintaining of recreation trails across the Province.
Todd Loewen, the Minister of Forestry, Parks and Tourism, says this will help ensure that the trails are safe and accessible for Alberta families.
“When we look at the trails that we have, there’s thousands of kilometres of trails across the province. They obviously are going to take some time and energy to keep up. There’s always maintenance and there’s always improving. These organizations have been great at trying to do their best to protect the environment in any way they can. There’s always improvements and they’re always looking at new trails to develop so that people can see and enjoy the great outdoors here in Alberta.”
Both organizations are receiving $1 million in provincial funding this year, and another million each over the next three years.
Loewen says having better maintained trails can help tourism in rural areas.
“Many of these trails of course are in rural Alberta in the wildland areas. It gives an opportunity for people to go an enjoy those areas. It’s great to be able to attract people and to have Albertans be able to travel across the province, but we need to have things for them to do and things for them to enjoy once they get there. I think this works hand in hand with tourism and it will help not only Albertans enjoy the great outdoors but others that come to Alberta for that.”
