This movie is art in the best way possible!
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is definitely one of my favourite movies of this year. It picks up a while after the first movie, Into the spider verse. As far as our Hero Miles Morales knows he solved the problem in the last movie and all was right in the world. That is, until a run-of-the-mill villain shows him there are still problems across the multiverse and a whole spider society out there.
We get a whole taste of multiverse shenanigans in this film and you don’t need to know everything or actually all that much about Spiderman to get the references but there are definitely nods and easter eggs for long-time fans.
The writing in this movie is absolutely phenomenal. There were a lot of heartfelt and well-done speeches by characters coming to terms with problems they have been struggling with. There was one that had me shedding a tear for sure. Not to mention my friends that may have shed a few more.
this movie is also a visual treat. Each world has a different visual style to it and that is even carried through when the characters cross over between dimensions. The movie also uses colour to tell a story, certain scenes are enhanced by the changing colours on the screen. There is just always something great to look at in this movie and that makes it so great to see up on the big screen.
The soundtrack is once again great and really gives us a feel of Miles’s character through the music. Last time we got the hit Sunflower from Post Malone and Swae Lee and this time around our album is Done by Metro Boomin. He has partnered with a multitude of other artists to create the soundtrack creating a distinct sound for the movie yet making each song feel unique.
I would recommend seeing the first film before diving into the sequel. also as a warning, this is not the end of Mile’s story. The movie leaves on a cliffhanger that is satisfying but definitely not where this story is going to wrap up. O.K., now that expectations have been set. GO SEE THIS MOVIE. It’s really good. If you want a taste check out the trailer below but as always I recommend going in blind if you’re able.
