The Alberta government is expanding drug treatment and recovery options with the establishment of new recovery communities.

Mental Health and Addictions minister Dan Williams says this is part of a long-term strategy to help people with drug addiction.

“This is going to be the example of how jurisdictions across the world can compassionately care for citizens that are struggling with this disease. To not do this I think would be a moral failure on our part as a government and that’s why the Premier with her leadership is showing such a good example when she says I’m not prepared to leave people behind.”

A total of 11 recovery communities are planned or underway, including one in Grande Prairie, and Williams says there are more to be announced.

“They will be in places where we need the most care, especially for folks with the lowest recovery capital, the folks who have the most to spare and do not see the path out. It’s going to be these sorts of recovery centres partnering with local communities that help us bring that out. My goal is to make sure that there is not any kind of wait time for anyone that needs recovery.”

Yesterday, Williams was at the announcement of a recovery community on the Tsuu T’ina First Nation near Calgary, we managed to ask a couple of questions to him at the press conference (video below)

Treatment at recovery communities will be free for all Albertans.
