Turtle Power! This Might be one of my favourite movies of this year.
TMNT Mutant Mayhem is a modern retelling of the classic tale. Four turtles along with a rat get covered in an Ooze that mutates them. The rat, already an adult, takes the young turtles in and raises them as his own. They end up living in the sewers away from humanity. The last time they tried to come to the surface they were discriminated. Of course, as the turtles got older they grow more curious about the human world. Eventually, they decide to venture out and end up making friends with a human, April o’ Neil. Together they come up with a plan to get the turtles to be accepted by society.
This is an animated film and the art direction is so good. I have heard people complain that every animated movie that has come out after Into The Spider-verse is just copying it. Which is just a blatantly wrong statement. The thing that I am seeing is more creativity coming out of animation studios after the Spider-verse films. Which is much appreciated. Anyways, this movie looks great.
Since these Turtles are teenagers there are a lot of pop culture references. Whether it is a BTS song, Anime, or something in between, this movie touches on a lot of relevant topics. At least for me, I caught all of them and thought they really made the world feel a little more real. It felt like these were modern teenagers talking about their favourite shows and such.
This movie deals with a lot of topics. We see the themes of teenagers growing up and finding their place in the world, a group experiencing discrimination to bully and its effects. I felt that it dealt with them all in a very good way. but of course, this is also a story about turtles so along with working through real problems the, movie has fun with it and landed every joke it put forward.
I would highly recommend going to check this movie out if you are a fan of the turtles, have some younger family members, or if you just enjoy good movies. Check out the trailer below I think it will give you a good idea of what you are in for. Although, if the trailer still doesn’t sell you, there are a lot of jokes I liked more in the film itself that had me laughing out loud!
