A great Murder Mystery!
I didn’t know what to expect going into this movie. I know we are approaching spooky season but in the descriptors of this film, it had the term mystery listed which is different than a lot of the other horror movies you tend to see around this time. Turns out it was because this wasn’t a horror movie. It is a mystery thriller that is set on Halloween and also has scary themes that help set the scene.
I think mysteries are great! Mystery movies can be amazing if done right and I would say this one was definitely done well. Based on the book by Agatha Christie this is the third movie in the series of recent films starring Hercule Poirot, the detective, as he solves the case. Learning this after I kind of want to go back and watch the other ones now.
We first meet Poirot as he has given up on solving mysteries and is just living life in Venice. Until he is approached by an old friend who is a mystery author and convinced to go check out this seance. He is told there might be something more going on that would interest him and as he learns more of the puzzle new secrets get unveiled.
The mystery was very well done and by the end of the movie when all the pieces were brought together it made a lot of sense. It wasn’t some twist ending out of nowhere which I thought was great. The cinematography in the film was also very well done. Since it is set on Halloween in Venice we get a lot of creepy shots like crows, rainstorms, and gondalas with masked riders in cloaks in the fog. All of these were unsettling in a really good way.
I would highly recommend checking out the moving if you a fan of mysteries or looking for something a little spooky with a good mystery behind it. Below I put the trailer which does a good job of setting the tone and doesn’t really give anything away.
