Movie Monday Mentions: Smile 2

This week, I went and saw Smile 2 in theatres. It’s so good if you are looking for something scary this season. I enjoyed the first one when it came out two years ago, but this one builds on it in so many good ways.

In this film, we follow Sky Riley the returning pop sensation. She had a bit of a break after an accident but is back on tour for her adoring fans. After a drug deal goes horribly wrong she gets infected with the curse of the smile.

The movie is brutal in a lot of different ways. The deaths are gory and made me wince. There are also scenes of deep secondhand embarrassment which show how crazy Sky is getting. It also puts jump scares when I least expected it…which I know is the point but still!

Visually the movie looked great. I mean, the scary things looked scary and bloody and I heard that they used a lot of practical effects which helped to make things feel more real. Since Sky is a Pop Sensation we get to see a lot of fun outfits and sets that we don’t in the first movie. So, it was great to look at. There was one point where the movie felt like a music video…until I remembered it was a horror movie.

With Sky singing songs the soundtrack has a good blend of fun pop-y songs that contradict really well with the scary ambient sounds. They made all the right noises to make me feel on edge at all times.

Overall really enjoyed the film and hope that we end up getting a third one. I don’t want to spoil anything, but the opportunity is there if they want to. If they keep doing and learning like they have been this might be one of my favourite horror franchises. Check out the trailer if you’re still on the fence!
